Sheltering Yourself In Shelter Island? Know These Things First
Sometimes referred to as “the beauty that has its challenges”, Shelter Island is a town and island of Suffolk county in New York. The island based city has a really small population around 2,392 according to the census of 2010 yet it has great historical value. The island is nestled between the northern and southern forks of the Long Island and on one side of the island is Gardiners Bay. The island has around eight thousand acres of land however around one third of the land is under The Nature Conservancy which protects the vast wetland, marshland and overall wild state of the region. Due to this the town has four bird watching and hiking trails which vary in length yet all of them have something different to offer, these trails are a way most of the residents spend their time walking and enjoying the serenity that nature offers.
The island was first inhabited by the Manhanset tribe when Europeans first encountered the island. These Algonquian speaking people mostly relied on farming, fishing and hunting for their food supplies however gradually the English started to settle on the island and one of the first people to settle here was Nathaniel Sylvester, he was one of the sugar merchants that bought the land from Stephen Goodyear. By the year 1674, he claimed ownership of most of the surrounding islands including Fishers Island.
Now, most of the Manhansett people had declined in number and power. The Sylvester estate made large profits from their trade in plantation and formed the
Triangle trade. After the death of Nathaniel he divided the land among his sons who sold one thousand acre each to William Nicoll and George Haven after which people started settling on the island.
