Concrete Coatings

Can a concrete coating be applied to all existing concrete surfaces?

No, but it can be applied to many concrete surfaces.

If your concrete is structurally sound and doesn’t have too many cracks, then it should be safe to coat over it. However, special preparation is required and some of the cracks or holes in the existing concrete may need to be filled over before the project can begin.

However, if your concrete floors are extremely worn, then they may just crumble when we try to grind them. In this case, we recommend either a total concrete replacement or an epoxy slurry on top of the concrete to give it a new look entirely.

Are different textures, patterns, and colors possible with a concrete coating?

Yes, there are many different styles you can try.

Modern concrete coatings have all sorts of styles you can try, personalizing the color, shape, design, and much more. From slate-style tiling to concrete business logos, there is so much we can do to make the concrete flow seamlessly with the aesthetic of your home or brand.

How durable are Concrete coatings?

They are very durable! The entire Infinity Epoxy team highly recommends adding the proper coating to your concrete.

However, like all floor surfaces, the life expectancy can vary depending on how you treat it. For example, the quality of the products used, the thickness of the product used, the amount of traffic received, and whether the concrete is indoor/outdoor can all have an effect on the lifespan of the concrete coating.

If you want to maximize the lifespan on your concrete coating, we would recommend top-notch surface preparation before the project begins, followed by regular cleaning and maintenance in the future. Occasional pressure-washing with a mild detergent is also recommended to keep the finish looking as good as new.

Epoxy coatings are extremely durable if you’re looking for a long-lasting concrete coating specifically.

How long does it take to install a concrete coating?

It depends on the project.

For example, a small basement flooring project could be completed within a week, while more complex decorative concrete floors with unique colors and designs could take you a few weeks or even months.

If your existing concrete is in good shape and doesn’t need much prep, then that can significantly reduce the time needed to complete the project, usually shaving off a couple days.

What does “no tear out” mean?

“No tear out” means that you don’t need to tear out your existing concrete, leading to structural problems and issues with wiring, plumbing, etc.

Basically, “no tear out” jobs can be done with your existing concrete by specially preparing it. This helps you to save money, time, and hassle.

Can you help me remove the old concrete coating?

Of course!

We can help remove the thin-set mortar, glue and old concrete coating before helping to revitalize your space.

Concrete Resurfacing

What Causes Concrete to Crack?

Shrinking is actually what causes those cracks in concrete.

Basically, shrinkage occurs when there is too much water used in the concrete mix. When the surface hardens and dries, excess water from the mix will evaporate away in the air, making the overall concrete structure shrink a little. The shrinking concrete is forced apart, causing cracks.

However, there can be other causes of concrete shrinking, such as drying too quickly and a lack of control joints.

How are cracks addressed and can they reappear?

Cracks in concrete can be made whole again, so don’t worry too much.

If the concrete cracks are very wide, they’re repaired with something called a concrete patching compound. If the cracks are smaller, you can usually use a liquid filler or concrete caulk like what you would find at many DIY stores.

Nonetheless, you need to identify the root cause of the crack before you go filling it in – it could be the sign of a major problem that needs addressing. If it’s the sign of a larger structural problem, then it may need investigating. Filling in cracks caused by a systematic problem will just lead to more cracks down the line.

If the cause is identified as non-serious, then clear the area of debris and prepare it for the filler or caulk. Be sure to use high-quality products so that the cracks don’t keep coming back.

What is the process of resurfacing?

  1. Prepare the surface – Remove any dirt, oil, and debris from around the concrete. If you’re struggling to get the concrete clean, try a pressure washer with a mild detergent and rinse. If there are any paints, coatings, or overlays on the concrete, they must be removed and stripped away.
  2. Repair any cracks – Use polymer concrete, caulk, or filler to repair any cracks and use epoxy mortar to fill any holes, making sure that there aren’t any serious causes behind the damage. We need the surface to be as flat and even as possible.
  3. Resurface – apply the resurfacing material evenly, spreading it across the concrete surface very carefully. Special tools like trowels can help to ensure a flat finish.
  4. Customize – Apply any custom colors or effects to your concrete that you’ve got planned. Then apply a seal coat to protect the surface from stains and harsh abrasive cleaning techniques.
  5. Curing – The concrete needs to dry (aka “cure”) for 48-72 hours. Completely avoid stepping on the surface or using it at all for at least 72 hours – using it too early could cause irreversible cracks and damage.

Epoxy Floors

What Are The Benefits Of Garage Epoxy Flooring?

There are many reasons that you might install epoxy flooring in your garage:

  • It’s resistant to chemical & oil spills
  • It’s very strong and durable, often lasting 10-20 years
  • It’s difficult to crack or chip like concrete
  • It’s resistant to mold, bacteria, mildew, and other nasties
  • It’s easy to clean and maintain (simple sweeping & mopping)
  • There are various colors, styles, & finishes you can choose
  • Anti-slip additives can be included for safety
  • Epoxy can easily handle vehicle traffic and foot traffic
  • It protects your underlying concrete slab from damage
  • It can withstand the impact of dropped tools, car parts, etc.

These are just some of the great reasons to try an epoxy garage floor!

Where Can Epoxy Flooring Be Applied?

Epoxy flooring can be applied in many different residential, commercial, and industrial settings, including:

  • Home garages
  • Residential basements
  • Professional mechanic garages
  • Retail spaces
  • Shopping malls
  • Industrial warehouses
  • Restaurants & fast food chains
  • Hospitals & clinics
  • Schools & universities
  • And much more!

The easy-to-clean antibacterial nature of epoxy flooring makes it ideal for many settings, especially those dealing with high amounts of foot traffic or those that need to be hygienic.

How long does it take to install an epoxy garage floor?

As always, it depends on the project at hand.

If there are minimal cracks to repair, then the epoxy floor can be installed on the garage floor in as little as 1 day, though larger garages could take multiple days.

If your garage floor has significant cracks that need repairing before the epoxy, then this could add 1-2 days onto the process.

How much money does an epoxy garage floor cost?

The price can range from around $5 to $13 per square foot depending on the type of epoxy floor coating you need and whether you want any additives like fancy dyes and anti-slip materials.

For standard color flakes, you’re looking at $5-8. For higher-end custom dyed metallic epoxy floors, you’re looking more like $10-13 or above.

How Long Can An Epoxy Floor Last?

Epoxy floors can last for 5-10 years in residential garages and up to 10-20 years in some settings with the proper care and maintenance.

It all depends on how much you use the space.

The more traffic and high-impact smashes in an area, the quicker the epoxy will deteriorate.

Why should I have a professional install my garage floor vs DIY?

If you don’t install an epoxy garage floor properly, you could end up with epoxy paint peeling off and sticking to your car tires.

It’s always better to get a professional installation, as there’s so much that can go wrong with DIY epoxy installations. There are toxic fumes to consider, as well as the conditions and preparation required for a successful installation.

Are Epoxy Floors Slippery?

Our contractors can add an anti-slip coating into the epoxy mix that will make the floors grippy underfoot, helping to reduce slips, trips, and falls.

However, epoxy floors can be slippery when wet regardless of their composition, so be very careful if they get wet.

Concrete Staining

What is concrete staining?

Concrete staining is when you use stains on top of a concrete finish to achieve a certain color or stylistic effect.

Usually, concrete staining means that an acid substance (reactive) or water-based substance (non-reactive) is used as a finish to “stain” the concrete.

Is a Stained Concrete Floor Durable?

Stained concrete floors are durable, though polished concrete floors tend to fare better in high-traffic areas and outdoor areas with high exposure to the sun’s UV rays.

If your surface is in a low foot-traffic indoor area, then it should be fine for 10-20 years before fading.

How Do I Choose Which Type Of Concrete Stain Is The Best For Me?

There are many different types of concrete stain you can choose from, but the most common are acid stains, water-based stains, and concrete dye.

Here are the key facts for each type of concrete stain:

  • Acid Stain – these stains penetrate the concrete and create a surface which is impervious to the sun’s UV rays, so acid stain concrete is perfect for outdoor spaces and hot climates with lots of sun
  • Water-Based Stains – these stains impregnate the concrete and can create very unique colors, but they are susceptible to damage from UV rays and foot traffic over time, so they’re quite high-maintenance and require high-quality concrete sealer
  • Concrete Dye – concrete dye is the most natural and transparent stain, though it’s difficult to install and is almost susceptible to damage/fading from UV rays and high foot-traffic areas

Hopefully this helps you to make your decision!

Polished Concrete

What is Polished Concrete?

Polishing concrete is a glossy, polished version of regular concrete.

The polishing process involves grinding the concrete with industry-leading equipment, honing it, and then using special bonded adhesives to polish the surface and achieve a subtle, reflective finish.

As well as looking chic and classy, polished concrete surfaces are cost-effective, durable, and easy to maintain. They are widely used in high-traffic buildings and areas.
