How Is Polished Concrete Done?
Polished concrete is done by grinding a concrete slab floor with special diamond aggregate and concrete polishing equipment that shines and polishes the surface until is has a unique shine. The whole process can take anywhere from a few hours to 2-3 days depending on the size of the area you polish. Here is the basic multi step process of polishing concrete flooring:
- Preparation – the concrete slab is prepared for polishing, this usually means deep cleaning and may require the repair of any cracks or holes in the concrete surface
- Initial grinding – the first grind removes any minor pits, bumps, and blemishes in the floor
- Fine grind – diamond abrasives and special aggregate is used in a plastic or resin mix and ground into the floor
- Final grit – we may use 1500-grit or even finer aggregate for the final stages of the grind, especially if you want a very high-gloss finish
- Impregnating sealer – throughout the concrete polishing process, sealer is applied to the fground as part of the resin mix… this sealer helps to harden the polished concrete flooring and protect the finish so that a top coat or protective layer isn’t necessary
Both wet and dry polishing methods exist, though most contractors use the dry polish method because it’s faster, more convenient and more eco-friendly. Everybody wins!
Is a Polished Concrete Floor Expensive?
Polished concrete flooring isn’t particularly expensive, costing around $3 – $12 per square foot on average. If you’re a homeowner working with a small area and tight spaces, that might slightly increase the price. The price could also go up if you request custom dyes or finishes too.

Decorative Concrete Coatings
To save on cash, some people try to polish their own flooring. We would not recommend this! While the process seems very simple, it requires expert tools, heavy-duty machinery, resins, and knowledge to know when you can stop and when you need to continue the grind for that perfect look.
