East Hampton has a rich history and played key roles or was somehow involved in many wars. The land was inhabited by many people during different times but during the late 17th century much of this land was sold to the colonists. The colonists bought this land from the historical Montaukett people who were the Pequot people and the Native American that lived here were from the Lenape nation. Chief Wyandanch sold the famous island of Gardiner to the English colonist Lion Gardiner, in the ensuing trades the land which is the land of Hither Hills state park was sold to the colonists. The widow of chief Wyandanch sold rest of the land from hither hills to Montauk tip for just a mere hundred pounds what ensued was the total pushing out of the Montaukett people from the land even though they were allowed to hunt and farm yet after some time the colonist made them leave however all the people that were left behind and the ones that were pushed out later settled in Brothertown.

The city was originally an agriculture-based city but when people discovered that whales beached on the shores, they decided to hunt them and extracted fins and oil from them which was a big industry back then. However, as the demand for the whale products grew, people started hunting more and more of the whales. Some of the people went out and hunted live whales. The peak of the whaling industry was in 1847 when there were around 60 ships in Sag Harbor and the industry employed 800 in the business directly or indirectly.
