History of East Hampton
The historically rich city of East Hampton lies in the Suffolk county of New York and it is perhaps one of the most famous of all the cities in Suffolk County because of the importance of this city in its political and historical value. The town lies on the eastern end of Long Island towards the south shore and has a population of 21,457 which is lesser than Riverhead. It also has a shoreline of 70km which makes the town really beautiful.
The town is a medium sized town which is contrasting as compared to the town of Shelter Island, which has a population of only 2k people and is considered a small town.
East Hampton has a rich history and played key roles or was somehow involved in many wars. The land was inhabited by many people during different times but during the late 17th century much of this land was sold to the colonists. The colonists bought this land from the historical Montaukett people who were the Pequot people and the Native American that lived here were from the Lenape nation. Chief Wyandanch sold the famous island of Gardiner to the English colonist Lion Gardiner, in the ensuing trades the land which is the land of Hither Hills state park was sold to the colonists. The widow of chief Wyandanch sold rest of the land from hither hills to Montauk tip for just a mere hundred pounds what ensued was the total pushing out of the Montaukett people from the land even though they were allowed to hunt and farm yet after some time the colonist made them leave however all the people that were left behind and the ones that were pushed out later settled in Brothertown.
The city was originally an agriculture-based city but when people discovered that whales beached on the shores, they decided to hunt them and extracted fins and oil from them which was a big industry back then. However, as the demand for the whale products grew, people started hunting more and more of the whales. Some of the people went out and hunted live whales. The peak of the whaling industry was in 1847 when there were around 60 ships in Sag Harbor and the industry employed 800 in the business directly or indirectly. The famous book Moby Dick also mentions the port of Sag Harbor in its books many famous voyages also set off from this port among those were that of Mercator cooper who was the first one to touch east Antarctica.
East Hampton was not just renowned for its whaling industry but also politically because the first lady Julia Gardiner spent her childhood in the town, after the death of her father went on to marry the president. Jacqueline Kennedy also spent her adolescent years in East Hampton, Theodore Roosevelt was quarantined in Montauk after Spanish American war. Bill and Hilary Clinton also spent their week-long summer vacation in East Hampton.
The military history of East Hampton is something everybody is familiar with and the city has been involved in many wars. Massacre valley is an example which was a skirmish in which 30 members of the Montaukk valley were killed. Apart from this throughout history East Hampton has been a stakeholder in American revolution, American civil war, World war 1 and world war 2 yet after all these wars the city has been on a rise. Clubs like the Maidstone club have survived and are a place for the moneyed elites.
